Volkswagen’s namesake brand as well as Jetta have entered the Uzbekistan market with a lineup of vehicles produced in China, underscoring the growing role of the company’s China operations as a global export hub.

The initial lineup includes China-produced VW-branded models such as the Tiguan L Pro, Passat Pro, Teramont Pro, Teramont X, Tharu XR and Lavida XR, alongside Jetta-branded models VS5 and VS7.

The Central Asian country is the first overseas market to be fully managed by Volkswagen China Passenger Cars Brand, said CEO Robert Cisek on Monday.

“Export is a key strategic goal for Volkswagen,” said Cisek. “Uzbekistan represents the first step in our ambitious plan to tap into high-growth markets with products from China.”

Volkswagen said it plans to capitalize on China’s mature automotive ecosystem and localized supply chain to deliver vehicles tailored to regional demand while maintaining cost competitiveness.

With a population exceeding 38 million, Uzbekistan is one of Central Asia’s fastest-growing automotive markets. Volkswagen cited industry data showing total vehicle sales more than doubled from 2021 levels to exceed 461,000 units in 2025.

Volkswagen plans to establish a retail network of 13 dealerships across Uzbekistan this year, expanding to 24 outlets by 2028.

While the first phase focuses on exports from China, Volkswagen also outlined plans for local assembly. In partnership with Alyans Auto, semi-knocked-down production is scheduled to begin in Tashkent by the end of 2026.

The facility is expected to have annual production capacity of 20,000 vehicles and create around 200 jobs in its initial phase, with employment potentially exceeding 3,000 workers in a future expansion.

The Uzbekistan project also serves as a test case for Volkswagen’s wider export ambitions from China.

The company said it is evaluating additional overseas opportunities in markets increasingly aligned with Chinese technology standards, including Southeast Asia, the Commonwealth of Independent States region and South America.

The strategy reflects a broader shift among global automakers operating in China, where advanced manufacturing capabilities, competitive supply chains and rapid technology development are increasingly being leveraged not only for the domestic market but also as a base for international expansion.
