A maiden voyage ceremony for the Dalian-Middle East container route was held on May 26, filling the gap of direct shipping services.
The route also creates an efficient maritime corridor for exporting Northeast China’s products, including grain, chemical products, electromechanical equipment and auto parts.
A fleet of eight vessels each with a capacity of 20,000 to 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units has been deployed, sailing directly to major ports in India, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
Boasting a prime geographic location, complete port facilities and mature logistics networks, Dalian in Liaoning province is steadily strengthening its status as Northeast Asia’s international shipping, aviation and logistics center.
The city has refined institutional mechanisms for shipping center development. Its seaports maintain stable operation amid a continuously optimized business environment and a comprehensive port cluster has taken shape.
Moreover, Dalian has formed an aviation network across Northeast Asia and connecting the globe. It acts as a core gateway for Northeast China’s opening-up and a vital hub for regional aviation resources allocation.
Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport has 80 aircraft stands with a peak hourly handling capacity of 35 flights, ranking among China’s top single-runway airports in operational efficiency. It operates 215 routes, connecting with 122 cities both domestically and internationally.
Jinzhouwan International Airport, which is under construction, is expected to enhance the city’s status as a regional aviation hub. As China’s first offshore artificial island airport, it has been listed among 109 major projects under the national 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30).
Meanwhile, the Dalian International Shipping Center Building, a landmark for the city’s shipping and financial sectors, is in the final construction stage. Standing at nearly 246 meters tall, the building is expected to be delivered by year-end.
To advance the Northeast Asia international logistics center, Dalian has rolled out improved policies, expanded logistics corridors and broadened service coverage. A modern logistics system featuring corridors, hubs and networks is beginning to take shape. Its combined transportation capacity leads Northeast China, facilitating trade expansion at home and abroad.
Dalian now runs 108 container liner routes linking more than 300 ports across over 160 countries and regions worldwide. It is home to 51 registered water transport enterprises and operates 179 commercial vessels with a total dead-weight tonnage of 928,800 metric tons.
On April 26, Dalian Shipping 01, operated by Dalian Shipping, officially commenced service. This marks progress for Dalian’s shipping sector in boosting local transport capacity, upgrading the port and shipping ecosystem, and fostering a modern shipping service system.
Moving ahead, Dalian Shipping will build a professional fleet mainly for bulk cargo transport with diversified vessel types, and establish a global shipping network integrating domestic and foreign trade.
Furthermore, as a key hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, Dalian’s China-Europe freight trains operate efficiently and stably, opening up new channels for international multimodal transport. They have galvanized Liaoning’s export-oriented economy and the all-around revitalization of Northeast China.
In 2024, Dalian dispatched 195 China-Europe freight trains carrying 21,400 TEUs, up 10 percent and 12 percent year-on-year respectively. The cargo consisted of auto parts, mechanical equipment, daily necessities and chemical products.
In 2025, the container volume of sea-rail intermodal transportation at Dalian Port exceeded 540,000 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 5.8 percent, marking smooth logistics connectivity between the northeastern hinterland and Dalian Port’s maritime gateway.
