A service center for economy and trade between China and countries whose main languages are Portuguese and Spanish addressed strategic cooperation with 16 companies in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, as agreements were signed on Monday to help expand business in overseas markets.

The companies included leading tech innovation enterprises and mainstream financial institutions.

Under the agreements, the center will establish a cross-border e-commerce training system for the Latin American market, providing the companies credit investigations, risk assessments and cross-border financial support.

In addition to the 16 companies and financial institutions, the center has partnerships with more than 200 market entities and professional service providers, including tech innovation companies in the field of artificial intelligence, said Wu Yanxiang, deputy director of the administrative and legal affairs bureau of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

Currently, China’s artificial intelligence industry is among the global leaders, while many Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries face challenges such as talent shortages and weak technological foundations, Wu said. Wu is also vice chairman of the board of the Service Center for Economy and Trade between China and Portuguese/Spanish-speaking Countries.

“The challenges help create a highly complementary supply and demand dynamic between the industries of these regions, offering significant opportunities for Chinese tech companies to expand internationally,” Wu said.

Technology research and development, along with high-end manufacturing, is one of the four leading industries in the Hengqin cooperation zone. As of March, the cooperation zone had established 27 national and provincial-level technology business incubators and new research and development institutions.

The service center will focus on three main business directions including promoting the cross-border implementation of artificial intelligence, regularly organizing customized overseas business delegations and deepening the collaboration of the governmental, industrial, academic and research sectors.

“These efforts aim to further strengthen Macao’s role as an important bridge in China-Portuguese economic and trade cooperation,” Wu said.
