The city gate tower of Pingyao Ancient City in Jinzhong, Shanxi, is a landmark of the historical city wall. An elegant timber structure with triple eaves and green-tiled roofs, it offers sweeping views over the ancient lanes below. Once a vital part of defense systems of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), it also stands as a silent witness to the rise and prosperity of Shanxi merchants.
