Eurostat has released the new edition of its Migration and asylum in Europe, with the latest available data.

The publication looks at topics such as migration to the EU, migration within the EU and from the EU, population by citizenship, international protection and asylum, irregular migration, and the skills of migrants.

Did you know that in 2024, almost 10% (43 million) of the EU population were citizens of another country than their country of residence, with 3.1% (14 million) being citizens of another EU country and 6.4% (29 million) of a non-EU country? Or that in 2023, nearly 1.5 million people emigrated from the EU to a non-EU country? Are you aware that the EU countries issued 3.5 million first residence permits to non-EU citizens in 2024 allowing them to reside legally for reasons like employment, education and family reunification?

This interactive publication guides you through key indicators on migration and asylum in Europe, offering interactive visualisations and short summaries of the main findings. It allows you to explore and compare data on migration and asylum at EU and country level.

The article marks the International Migrants Day, celebrated on 18 December.
