
China is inching closer to plugging a crucial gap in high-end mobile phone memory, with the latest progress made by ChangXin Memory Technologies expected to further deepen coordination among domestic chip designers, handset makers and suppliers in the era of on-device artificial intelligence, said industry experts.
Their comments came as the Chinese company nears the end of its research and development validation for its first LPDDR6 chip — a dynamic random-access memory chip that promises more bandwidth, lower latency, better energy efficiency and stronger reliability.
As the CXMT chip eyes commercial production, experts said they believe the core design is largely settled and has undergone systematic testing for performance, power consumption, compatibility and mechanical reliability. “Under an optimistic timetable, small-batch introduction could begin as early as the second half of this year, followed by volume production in the first half of 2027,” said Guo Tao, a member of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence.
According to media reports, the CXMT chip is designed to reach a data rate of 12.8 gigabits per second, with a base operating rate of 10.7 Gbps when paired with a system-on-chip integrated circuit. Its power efficiency and reliability, availability and serviceability, or RAS, functions have been improved compared with the company’s previous memory chips.
Guo noted that the CXMT chip is set to enter the leading group of global products in the same technology generation offered by South Korean companies Samsung and SK hynix. “There is no longer a generational gap in the technology. The main differences will lie in process stability after large-scale production and the accumulation of long-term reliability data,” he said.
The CXMT chip’s peak speed is expected to help meet the high-bandwidth demands of on-device AI, while stronger RAS functions could reduce data errors during sustained AI workloads, Guo added.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher at market consultancy Pangoal, said higher bandwidth could ease a key bottleneck in running large AI models locally, while lower latency would support high-frame-rate gaming and smoother multitasking.
“Flagship smartphones will be the first to generate demand, as their users are most sensitive to such performance upgrades and can afford to pay a premium,” he said.
Beyond the chip’s hardware specifications, local coordination is also a core strength, Jiang said. “It enables rapid customization backed by strong demand from Chinese phone manufacturers and creates a valuable market opportunity as supply-chain security gains importance.”
