Chinese and British business leaders convened in Shanghai on Tuesday for a sustainability summit, exploring pathways for cooperation on green innovation and emphasizing that the transition to a sustainable economy demands collaborative action.
The 2026 Sustainability & Innovation Summit, hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, brought together over 100 participants to exchange ideas, share practices and explore practical approaches to sustainable business development.
The event also announced the winners of the 2026 sustainability and innovation awards. Now in its fourth year, the awards featured eight categories, including green tech and digital innovation, climate action, and outbound investment, celebrating pioneering ideas, technologies, business solutions and leadership that are accelerating sustainable development across industries.
Lyu Jianzhong, chair of the 2026 awards, emphasized the growing recognition of sustainability as a core business priority. “The awards are not about recognizing perfection. They are about recognizing progress,” Lyu said.
“Their purpose is to encourage organizations to innovate, collaborate and turn ambition into action.”
Sohail Shaikh, British deputy trade commissioner for China, outlined key areas for UK-China cooperation, including innovation and technology, green finance and investment, and business partnerships.
China is making rapid strides in renewable energy deployment, electrification, and sustainable supply chains, industrial transformation and responsible investment, while the UK brings strengths in innovation, finance and regulatory expertise, Shaikh said.
“Together, this creates real potential for collaboration, not only to address climate challenges, but to support sustainable and resilient growth.”
The summit also featured five panel discussions examining critical opportunities and challenges shaping sustainable business. Sessions covered topics ranging from AI and digital innovation to sustainable supply chains, ESG considerations in outbound investment, social impact and cross-sector partnerships.
“Throughout the day, one message has come through clearly: sustainability is no longer a stand-alone agenda. It is increasingly shaping how organizations innovate, invest, build partnerships and create long-term value,” Stuart Dunn, executive director of BritCham Shanghai, said.
