Eurostat is proud to announce the winners of the Multinational Enterprise Data Discovery and Extraction Challenges, part of the European Statistics Awards Programme for Web Intelligence.
The 2 challenges ran in parallel and aimed to develop and benchmark new methods for identifying and extracting annual financial data from the web for multinational enterprise (MNE) groups. The Discovery Challenge focused on automatically finding online sources of annual financial information for MNE groups, while the Extraction Challenge aimed to develop methods to automatically extract key financial information from those identified sources.
The Discovery Challenge attracted 58 teams and the Extraction Challenge 57 teams, with 45 teams participating in both competitions. In total, 71 individuals from 21 countries took part in the challenges.
Winners were selected in 3 award categories:
- Accuracy Award – team MUR won the first prize for the most accurate discovery of financial data, and team toad won the first prize for the most accurate extraction of financial data from online data sources.
- Reusability Award – the first prize in the Data Discovery Challenge went to team ASE_TEAM and the first prize in the Data Extraction Challenge went to spacedace. These teams had the most thoroughly described and documented solutions, with the greatest potential to be scaled up.
- Innovativeness Award – the first-prize winner in the Data Discovery Challenge was team HCSO while team spacedace placed first in the Data Extraction Challenge. These teams had the most original approaches.
