The Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) discussed the progress on European official statistics on 13 November 2025 and adopted the Council conclusions on EU statistics. The Council welcomed:

  • The improvements in the quality and availability of the Principal European Economic Indicators;
  • The ongoing work of Eurostat in cooperation with the statistical authorities of the Member States to collect data on defence expenditure in a timelier manner, in the context of the activation of National Escape Clauses;
  • The efforts of the European Statistical System to reduce the administrative burden for businesses and public administrations by reusing already collected data at EU and national levels and by leveraging new digital data sources and technological innovation.

The Council conclusions stressed the need to ensure the adequacy of human and financial resources for the development and production of European official statistics, including the resources needed for the substantial work to be carried out on the update of the European System of National Accounts and for harnessing the potential of new data sources and technologies.

The Council noted that 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the European Statistics Code of Practice and underlined that, for two decades, Eurostat and national statistical authorities have produced trustworthy and relevant official statistics and data on Europe in accordance with the principles of the Code.
